When to Use 100% Inspection vs. Sampling Inspection for Quality Control

As a buyer or importer of goods, one of the key considerations is verifying the quality of the products you receive. This is often done through inspections, but there are two main approaches: 100% inspection and sampling inspection. How do you choose between the two? Here's an overview of when to use each method:

100% Inspection

  • Pros: Ensures no defects are missed and gives maximum quality assurance.

  • Cons: Time-consuming and expensive for large batches or high volumes. Also slows down production and delivery.

Use when: When quality is absolutely critical (e.g. safety components), high cost of defects and/or low inspection costs relative to costs of recalls or rework.

Sampling Inspection

  • Pros: More efficient and economical than 100% inspection and does not slow down production as much.

  • Cons: Risk of accepting defective products or rejecting good products due to sampling uncertainty.

Use when: Defects are relatively rare, savings from sampling outweigh costs of potential errors, sample is representative if batch and proper sampling plan is used.
